Shockwave Therapy at Med LIGN Wellness Chiropractic
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment which consists of a series of low energy acoustic wave pulsations which are applied to the site of injury through the skin. Research shows that it is beneficial in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions with patients reporting a reduction of pain and improved range of motion as early as after the first treatment.
How Does it Work?
Shockwaves are sound waves that create positive and negative phases which produce direct mechanical forces as well as cavitation’s which then generate a second wave of shockwaves. Shockwave peak pressure is nearly 1000x stronger than those of ultrasound waves. These shockwaves produce an inflammatory response in the target area which causes an increase in the metabolic activity and breakup of excess calcium in the tissue which in turn leads to enhanced tissue healing and the stimulation of new tissue growth.
What Conditions Could Shockwave Treat?
According to studies published It has shown a remarkable recovery rate of 90% and 91% for plantar fasciitis and calcific rotator cuff tendinitis of the shoulder, respectively. Research has also shown Shockwave to be beneficial in the treatment of many musculoskeletal conditions including, but not limited to:
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Rotator Cuff Injuries
- Tennis & Golfer’s Elbow
- Shoulder/Hip Bursitis
- Achilles Injuries
- Patellar Tendinitis
- And Many More!
Is Shockwave Therapy Painful?
During treatment, patients may feel some discomfort. After treatment, there may be a throbbing pain in the area for 1-2 hours which is usually followed by a relief of the pain. Patients are advised to minimize physical activity and refrain from using ice or anti-inflammatory medications (Tylenol is acceptable) for 48 hours subsequent to treatment.
Benefits of Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy is a drug-free, non-invasive form of treatment which doesn’t introduce anything new to your body and instead stimulates the body’s own healing mechanisms. Also many patients report an immediate reduction of pain as well as increased range of motion in the affected areas. Lastly, Shockwave may also eliminate the need for cortisone shots and surgery which come with a host of potentially damaging side effects.
